We went berry picking at a U-pick farm, American River Cherry Company, in Placerville, CA. We discovered that they are one of the very few places that grows boysenberries. They are so delicious but are very hard to find these days. The farm had about ten long rows of berries to pick; they grow raspberries, blueberries, olallie, marion, and of course boysenberries. They also grow two varieties of cherries that were yummy, too. When you get there you have to register and they give you an empty plastic planting pot that you tie around your waist with twine. They place coffee filters inside the pots so that the berry juices won't stain your clothes. Boy, I wish I hadn't left the camera in the car. We sure looked cute with these buckets tied to our hips. Well, I guess Evelyn really looked cute. We had a lot of fun and the prices were reasonable and 'that's you paying for it' as Grandma Buttercup would say.
After gathering the precious boysenberries we drove to Horse Tail Falls. It's a nice looking waterfall viewable from the highway. Jason was getting a little outdoor fever. When he gets close to the mountains he just wants to fish or hike. Fortunately, for us the view from the car was sufficient for this trip.
On our way home we stopped at Rick's Dessert Diner, where all the movie stars go.
We had heard that Rick's was supposed to have more than 285 varieties of European and American desserts (at least that's what they're website claims). Well, they didn't have that many baked at one time but what they did have was delicious. I had a slice of Raspberry Diva Cake (poppy seed), Jason had Chocolate Hazelnut Torte, Grandma Buttercup had the Black Forest Torte, and Evelyn had a chocolate milkshake. The portions were huge. It will be a while before I crave cake.
