Dixon May Fair

The weather is warm, the smell of livestock is in the air, and we can either hear someone belting out a country song or the sound of squealing tires from the demolition derby. It must be time for the Dixon May Fair.

This year the pony was Evelyn's favorite animal at the fair. Last year it was the corn dog. She giggled the entire ride but refused to hold on, riding with her hands in the air. She looked so cute with her pig tails, pink western shirt, Levi's with pink accents, and pink princess boots. She even walked with a bow-legged swagger, the only thing this little cowgirl was missing was a hat. Of course it would have had to been pink too.
We all agreed that the ice cream was the best fair food.

Yummm! Evelyn sure liked it.

We arrived at the fair just in time to see the pig calling contest. It was fun to hear the different pig calling styles. We heard the standard 'SUEY' to Sweetpea's 'come here little piggy'. SweetPea is a little girl in our ward. We like going to the fair on Fridays because we get to see so many families from our ward.

The Dixon May Fair is an old fashioned country fair. In fact it's the oldest running fair in California, first held in 1876. You can get pretty close to the animals, in fact I even petted a hog. I was trying to get Evelyn to pet it too but she wasn't interested. She did like the cows and she even started mooing like a cow.

Even cowgirls need a little shut eye.

After Evelyn's nap, we met up with Jamie, Nelia, Adrienne, and Elijah Meurer. The kids had fun playing in the kids zone, where they had instruments, foam building blocks, games, and face painting. They played there for quite awhile until Elijah asked when we were going to the 'real fair' (i.e. the carnival ride area).
Evelyn was too short to ride any rides this year, but that didn't stop her from trying. She got in line for a roller coaster. I don't know what she told the other kids in line but somehow they didn't object to her line cutting as she preceded to the front of the line. I had to grab her off the stairs just before the ride worker measures the kids and collects the tickets. She didn't even have a ticket I suppose she thought she could just sweet talk her way on. I guess I know what ride we'll be standing in line for at next year's fair.
